Fishing With Grandpa

by Desmond Allen

/

about

A grandson remembering his grandfather.

lyrics

“Morning son, are they biting? The old man called out to the lad.
“Not much;” sighed the boy, “not with the earthworms I’ve had.”
“I bet I’ve jig that’ll work,” the old man laughed from behind.
“Well, let’s give it a try” said the boy on the fly, then he reeled in his line.

“I made it myself just the other day,” The old man smiled like a fox.
“I’ll tell you what, if you don’t catch a fish, I’ll buy you a new tackle box.”
“Ahh, but if it works, you know the drill, you have to clean all we catch.”
“Scaling the fish I taught you to do without getting a scratch.”(Ch)

Fishing with the old man was always my favorite thing. He taught me
‘bout life and taught me ‘bout girls and to put a hook on the string.
Hours and hours we talked about life; how it was and ought to be.
He loved to tell me stories of when he was young like me.

The jig hit the water, the fish struck at the line as the sun set in the hills.
There on the bank of their favorite spot; a favorite of grandpa and Bill.
They’d been fishing this same hole ever since the boy could walk.
And the old man had fished it himself ever since he could talk.

Grandpa passed away in May of the year I turn seventeen.
Fishing the lake on his favorite day for it was in the Spring.
I was at school when he breathed his last breathe I was to meet him that afternoon.
But he passed away before I could say “Thanks for the lessons I learned.”

Fishing with the old man was always my favorite thing. He taught me
‘bout life and taught me ‘bout girls and to put a hook on the string.
Hours and hours we talked about life; how it was and ought to be.
He loved to tell me stories of when he was young like me.

Outro
I loved to hear his stories of when he was little like me.
